As you can imagine, this was a monumental moment for the Israelites. All of the Israelites had been born into slavery in Egypt, and they knew very little of the God who had just freed them. The wondrous acts they witnessed in Egypt were enough to cause them to have full faith in God, in that moment. However, as fickle as humans can be, when faced with trials of leaving and nothing and nowhere to go, God knew the Israelites would very quickly forget the God who had loved and saved them. They would be so focused on the issues related to their journey and the escape that they would begin to doubt and question the God who freed them. To help fight against this, God instructed Moses to have a feast of unleavened bread that they might remember this day when they came up out of Egypt, out of slavery, all by the hand of the Almighty God. The unleavened bread would remind the Israelites of how quickly they had to escape Egypt before they had even time to add yeast to their daily bread in order to make it rise before baking. God continued to be with Moses and the Israelites who fled Egypt, guiding them on the journey out of Egypt and into a land that would one day be their own. He appeared to them. He led them along this journey as a pillar of cloud during the daytime and as a fire in the sky by night. Eventually, the Israelites came to the Red Sea, which is better called the Sea of Reeds, as Pharaoh, back in Egypt, was changing his mind and sending out chariots to go and kill the Israelites and all who had escaped Egypt in order to follow God. Here is where Moses, under the order of God, parts the Sea of Reeds, allowing the Israelites to get across just in time before the waves came crashing back down on their enemy, who was in hot pursuit.
