Joseph, now second in command over all of Egypt, recognizes the dire conditions of life outside of Egypt, the dire conditions in Canaan. So Joseph goes to work, making it possible for Israel and his sons and all their families to move to the land of Goshen within Egypt, where the conditions are much better. Here, God's budding nation of Israel would be provided for. Here they are fruitful and multiply greatly under the headship of Joseph, but in the land of Egypt. As years roll by and Israel prepares to die, he instructs his sons that once they leave Egypt and return to the land of Canaan, that they should take his bones with them, that he might be buried with his father Isaac and his grandfather Abraham in the land promised to them by God.
