So God has set aside a couple that he would bless with descendants which would become his people in order that he could reveal himself and this people group would be able to share knowledge of God and who he is with the entire world. The issue was Sarai and Abram had no children and they were well along in years which meant they were well past the age of bearing children of their own. So when things didn't happen in the timeline in which they thought it should, they took matters into their own hands. Spoiler alert, we've seen since the beginning of time and up until current history that taking matters into our own hands never works out the way that God wants. His plan is always better. But thinking back on the way they used to live, their old customs, they knew that when infertility issues happened, it was very customary during that day for people of wealth who needed their family line to continue to use their female servants as surrogates of sorts. And so that's exactly what Sarai does. She gives her maid servant named Hagar to Abram in order to have a child. This wasn't what God wanted. And although a child is born to Hagar and Abram who is named Ishmael, God does bless Ishmael and Hagar, but that wasn't the purpose that he had intended. He needed to show the world, he needed to show Sarai and Abram, if we only trust, his plan will come to fruition. And his plan is what we all need, whether we recognize it or not.
