A quick recap, God created the world and then He created mankind in His image so that we could continue the work of creating in the world. He asked us to be His partners in continuing to create and rule over the creation in which He used as a blessing for us. Unfortunately, when we reached for the apple, we reached for autonomy from God, thinking that we could learn everything we needed to know in our own way faster than when He wanted to teach it. Unfortunately, that sinful nature created a separation between God and man. We watch throughout the rest of the stories we've read this week that on our own, we did horribly. And so God knew that He needed to reveal Himself to mankind because He had the how-to book. He was the one who created the world, He created us, and He was the only one who could teach us the best way of living in the world. And so we meet Abram. God takes Abram and asks him to separate himself. He says, leave behind the polytheistic worldview in which you have and understand that I am one God, I am the one true God, and I have the way that is so much easier to live. Abram believed, and that was it. It took that little tiny bit of belief for God to say, it is through you that I will be able to reach the entire human race. Your descendants, between you and your wife Sarah, you will have children, those children will have children, and so on and so forth, until generations later, I will have an entire nation of Israel dedicated to me. Now they don't do a really great job, as we're about to see throughout the rest of the Bible. It wasn't that God chose those over the others because they were special or more important or more loved to God. He chose them simply because Abram said, I believe and you can tell the world about you through me. And that's what they were. They were completely imperfect people, and they just knew who God was, and they knew of his ways as much as they possibly could at that time. And they chose to live life that way, imperfectly, so that they could be a light to the world of who the one true God is and what he is capable of doing if we only let him. We'll figure out more tomorrow.
