This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of David and of Abraham (Matthew 1:1).

Good morning. We are back thinking about the Bible. I'm going to read to you from Matthew chapter 1 verse 1 and we're going to talk about that. There's a lot of good things in here and and the few minutes we have right now is going to cover it by any means, but it's something we can talk about to start with. First of the year is a good way to start the year because Matthew 1, 1 says this is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of David and of Abraham. So, three main things we want to see there. One is that these are the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah. This is speaking to his humanity. Well, it always of course when we talk about descendant of David, descendant of Abraham, but there's theological implications to those two personalities to be descended from those two persons means something special, but the fact that he has a record of ancestors reminds us that Jesus is like us. He's human. He has a family tree and there's a few problems with that family tree if you look back through it as you probably recall, but our point this morning is that the record of the ancestors of Jesus throws us right into our face. You might say that this is a true human being. This is not just a a theophany. This is not a spiritual presence or whatever. This is actually a person with ancestry and so forth and part of that ancestry is David and so he's kingly and the other part that's mentioned in verse one is of Abraham. So, he is of the covenant line and those are the most important things that Matthew's going to unfold throughout his whole gospel that this is a true human being who is kingly and covenantal and that's what it's all about. So, I'd have you think about that today as you are beginning the new year. Think about Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior is a human being like us, both God and human. We can't understand how those two natures can be joined in a single person without any confusion of the two, but it is true. So, we have a human messiah and he is both kingly and covenantal. Think about that today.
