Hello and welcome to thinking about the Bible. We're back again and we've been talking about starting out a few days ago looking at Romans 12 1 and 2 where we need to be a living sacrifice and to not be conformed to the world but be transformed by the renewing of our mind Romans 12 1 or 2 we talked about in Ephesians 2 8 to 10 Titus 2 11 to 14 how we are saved by grace but for a life of good works and we talked about how that is really the essence of what what we are as Christians graciously saved but have a duty of a particular lifestyle particular works now the question might be how do we renew that mind how do we cultivate those good works what is it that we're supposed to be doing well in 2 Timothy 3 16 it says that all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine for reproof for correction for instruction righteousness the man of God may be complete thoroughly equipped for every good work the thing that we need to realize here and I'm turning over to Hebrews 4 I want to read from there as well he was 412 for the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword piercing even to the division of soul and spirit and of joints and marrow and as a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart and there is no creature hidden from his sight but all things are naked and open to the eyes of him to whom we must give account so here's a question we're going to renew the mind where we want to cultivate righteousness and want to cultivate a life of Christ likeness the scripture is the tool used by the Holy Spirit to cut to the division of soul and spirit even then what they're all that means is that it that there is nothing that the Word of God and as it is wielded by the Spirit as it is in the hand of the Spirit of God applied to our lives there's nothing that cannot be divided changed and reformed for the sake of the kingdom of Jesus Christ so when we think about how it is that we're supposed to and I'm turning it back to the Timothy again how it is that we're supposed to do this it isn't something we just don't follow our heart or something frankly ridiculous like that what we do is we go to the Word of God and we pray that the Holy Spirit would apply the word to us in a mighty and effective fashion the non-christian who does not have the Spirit can read the same passages that we read and will not be affected at all it's only when the Spirit of God applies the Word of God that there is beneficial effect so the non-christian there's not going to be anything that happens there unless the Holy Spirit is applying that word and then there can be the renewal of a life that the death of the old man and the making of a new creation but when we talk about as Christians renewing our mind when we talked about being a living sacrifice when we want to live this life of good works that is supposed to follow our salvation by grace we must be steeped in the Word of God and we must be people of prayer asking the Holy Spirit to make the Word of God that tool let it be that tool in the hand of the Spirit to reshape us and to make us to renew our mind so that we are thinking speaking acting in a way that is pleasing to God and is appropriate for people who call themselves followers of Jesus Christ so think about that today think about the need to get into the word the need to ask the Spirit to apply the word to your life and then our job of course is to work hard to show the results of that salvation God bless y'all see you again tomorrow
