Hello and welcome to Thinking About the Bible. Today we are talking about what it says in Galatians 4, but when the right time came God sent his son born of a woman subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law so that he could adopt us as his very own children. So what does it mean to be born of a woman? That's pretty obvious I guess, but to be born under the law. What does that mean? Well it was first of all something that was you might say unique to the Jews, to the Jewish people. Indeed it was unique because they were the ones as Paul says who received the oracles, who received the law and that's what the scripture is talking about. That it's not just born with a conscience or something of that sort or not just born subject to the laws of the Roman Empire. Those things were not in view. What was in view was a Jewish child of the descendant of Abraham, descendant of David also in this case, and born subject to the Mosaic dispensation, the Mosaic ritual and so forth. Everyone is subject to I guess what we call the moral law. So in this case what we are most concerned with is the law that was put in place as a parenthical dispensation leading up to the time of Christ's coming. So to be born under that circumstance means that he was subject to the laws of the Jewish people of the Mosaic dispensation. Couldn't sidestep that, couldn't ignore laws of sacrifice, couldn't ignore the laws of cleanliness and so forth, but was living under that dispensation and did so perfectly in perfect compliance with God's law. Why was that important? Well because he was a a savior for the Jewish people and to the Gentile. Paul says this several times to the Jew first and to the Gentile as well that Jesus was is the Messiah. And so it was of utmost importance that he would be not only of the Jewish bloodline, of the bloodline of Abraham, but that he would be living according to that particular Mosaic ritual, Mosaic law that God had given. And as his life under that dispensation, under that particular law was perfect, he was then able to redeem his people who had not lived perfectly under that law, but he had and so he could redeem the Jewish people along with the Gentiles in his death and resurrection. So again thinking about the Bible, thinking about Jesus this Christmas season, keep in mind that he is a Jew and he lived under the law, but he also came to change the law as it says in Hebrews, with the change of the priesthood there's a change in the law and that Mosaic dispensation has been set aside. We thank the Lord that he was willing to live under those circumstance that he might fulfill all the covenant requirements and therefore embrace and realize the covenant blessings that we have access to in Jesus our Lord and Savior.
