“Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour” (John 12:27).

I'd like to challenge you, during this Christmas season, to think about the reason that Jesus came to earth. Why was he born? And what was his purpose in coming to earth in human form and as a human being and living among us? Well, he tells us what his reason for that was. He says in John 12 that it was for the purpose of his death on the cross that he came. That was the whole reason he came here. So when we think about the Christmas season, I think it's very important that we also think about the cross. Jesus is the Eschaton Adam, the last Adam. He called himself over and over the Son of Man. What both of those terms, both of those designations of our Lord Jesus Christ tell us is that he came as the substitutionary sacrifice. He came to die in our place. We deserve death for our sins. From Adam on down, all people of the human race deserve to die for their sins. Well, Jesus died that we don't have to die. Jesus died that we might have life. Jesus died that our sins would be forgiven. Jesus died that we can have relationship with God the Father and have the confidence of eternity with him upon our passing from this realm. That's the reason he came to this earth. He came to this earth to make a resounding yes to all the promises that God had made to Adam, to Abraham, to the children of Israel, to David, to all of his people. All the promises he had ever made, the covenant promises of covenant blessings are yes in Jesus Christ. So it's very important for us to keep the cross connected to Christmas and keep Christmas connected to the cross because that is the reason that Jesus came to earth, that he might die on the cross for our sins and for our salvation.
