Hello and welcome to thinking about the Bible we're gonna read again from Luke chapter 2 as we continue in our our Christmas theme for the Advent season I don't want to read something we've already read but I want to touch on this again about the shepherds with their flocks in the field and behold an angel the Lord stood before them the glory of the Lord shone around them they're greatly afraid the angel speaks to them then verse 13 suddenly there was an angel the multitude of the heavenly host suddenly with the angel multitude the heavenly host praising God saying glory to God in the highest and on earth peace goodwill toward men so one angel came makes the announcement and then angels joined that single angel and began to praise God now the question is what are angels to us today as you say are we supposed to expect to have interaction with angels or is that something that's over and I would suggest to you that angels belong to the Old Covenant age in the sense that they do not have the constant interaction with humans like they did in in times past maybe since I constant but frequent or or notable interaction to remember that the law was given through angels according to the scripture an angel the Lord went before the people on the way to the promised land and so forth and of course we think of that as a theophany of the Eternal Son but the point is that something has changed and and if you go all the way back to the beginning Adam and Eve were created as a vice regents of God to have dominion over creation now they gave up that position by submitting to the direction of an angel in taking the form of an animal Satan who was created as an angel utilized the form or took over the the form or the body of a serpent we don't know exactly how that all happened but there was an angel and an animal so that's we could say the age of angels and animals and animals became a surrogate if you will for humanity as they were sacrificed on the altar for the sins of the people but it was just forestalling judgment until the Son of Man came till Jesus the Christ so that age humanity had been brought under the dominion of angels and animals animals acted as representatives to them for them in the sacrificial system and angels were giving him the law and were guiding the people with the coming of Jesus Christ that changed the age of the Son of Man began Jesus gave the law Sermon on the Mount and he says that he is actually the fulfillment of the law he is the final and perfect sacrifice so he took the place he supplanted angels and animals and and reap and put back into position humanity through him of course it's only in Jesus Christ that we can experience the blessings of dominion and blessings of the gospel going forth to bring others under the Lordship of Jesus Christ but it's very important to understand that we live in a different age than even up until the time that Jesus Christ was crucified and rose again that was the inauguration of a new creation Jesus is the firstfruits of many brethren and so I think it'd be misplaced interest for us to pursue angiology and that kind of thing instead we should be thinking about what is it Jesus the last Adam the Eschaton Adam the Son of Man what is it that he would have us to do as followers of the one who supplanted the age of angels and animals so Merry Christmas we live in a new age let's think about that today
