Hello and welcome back to thinking about the Bible and we're going to read something from Matthew 2 today that is not particularly Christmassy I guess you could say but it's about Jesus and his mother Mary and and I could say foster father Joseph when they went to Egypt to get away from Herod and in chapter 2 of Matthew verse 15 they were there until the death of Herod that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophets saying out of Egypt I called my son and that's a a quotation or a drawing from Hosea 11 1 and the question might come up how can that be a fulfillment of what Hosea was talking about because Hosea was talking about the children of Israel the nation of Israel and here of course we have Jesus being called out of Egypt well one thing you need to understand about Matthew his his theme throughout the whole of his book is how Jesus is the fulfillment of all that God had promised his people indeed one thing that Matthew teaches is that Jesus is the true Israel and so he has a typology of fulfillment in that sense or an actualization hard to say that word a realization I guess I'll use that because it's easier for me to say a realization of what God intended for his people in Jesus Christ so there's this typological fulfillment there's this realization there's this understanding that Jesus is in fact the fulfillment of all that God promised his people that it finds this laser point fulfillment in Jesus the Christ just as Paul said all of God's promises are yes in Jesus and that's in 2 Corinthians 120 as I recall so out of Egypt I called my son yes definitely it was a fulfillment but not a fulfillment in the way that we might be thinking of some other prophetic utterances of the Old Testament that found a very specific and very literal fulfillment in Jesus Christ this was something more I guess you can say theological it was an understanding that Jesus is the true son of God that he is the true son of Abraham he is the true son of David he is the true Israel and that all that God had promised to his people in Abraham and David and Israel all the things that God had intended find their fulfillment in Jesus and his people realize the fulfillment of those promises as they have relationship with God in Jesus Christ so Merry Christmas be thinking about that today how because of the coming of Jesus Christ we have access to all the promises of God and the fulfillment amen
