Welcome to thinking about the Bible and today we're thinking about a word we probably don't want to think about very much and that is the term or the name Satan and actually it might be better to call it a term because it is the Satan most of time in the Old Testament there that the term Satan the term I should say Satan appears about 27 times in the Old Testament and just means adversary I mean to minimize what or who this is but he's the adversary in fact in the book of Zechariah it's the Hebrew says that the priest Joshua is satanized or accused and attacked he's this this adversary is coming against him so very terrible figure in the scripture we know from the Bible that he was an angel who fell because he tried or wanted to exalt himself above God above Yahweh and is at enmity at war with God now he's not in any way shape or form a an equal or even close to being an equal of God he is a created being that God brought into existence and has complete control over him the scripture makes it clear that all the things that Satan does God still uses those things for his purposes whatever they might be so in the Old Testament is satan and in the New Testament is satanas and it's really just transliteration of the Hebrew into the Greek and as it means the same thing an adversary we also see it used to simply describe this prince of the evil spirits Prince of the year and is the again the enemy of God and perhaps in a way more importantly the enemy of God's people I mean I don't mean to be flippant God can take care of himself he doesn't there's no worries whatsoever again it's not some kind of a grand cosmic battle between God and Satan that's not at all the case however when it comes to us we are in a battle with Satan because he wants to destroy the people of God now to the degree that we rely upon the Holy Spirit and upon the power and the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ we have nothing to worry about in fact we don't have anything to worry about anyway but Satan is a powerful being and can bring great harm to the people of God and great harm to this earth but we know that that the Messiah Jesus has crushed the serpent's head that prophecy was was given way back in the beginning and he did that crush the serpent's head at the cross and we realize that event as Paul would talk to talked about it to the Church of Rome we realize that event as we actualize the rule and the reign of Jesus Christ in our lives so Satan the adversary the one who is against God and all that he stands for the adversary of God's people and someone a being that we do not need to fear because we are safe in the strength of our Lord Jesus Christ think about that today
