In the book of Matthew we read what is famously known as the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus is spending time with his disciples and really laying out an extensive teaching. It's one of the first times he does it in the Bible and in Matthew chapter 6 verse 22 and 23 Jesus says the eye is the lamp of the body if your eyes are healthy your whole body will be full of light and if your eyes are unhealthy your whole body will be full of darkness. And when you read this scripture the words used there for healthy and unhealthy they actually implies generous and stingy. So healthy eyes are generous eyes, unhealthy eyes are stingy eyes. And what does that look like? What does that mean to live with generous eyes or stingy eyes? And there was a time where I was on the way to the office and I was driving through the Starbucks drive-thru wanting to get my morning coffee, my morning breakfast and I don't know if it was because I hadn't had my coffee yet or what maybe had me in the not greatest of moods but I remember sitting there and the car in front of me had a bumper sticker that was pretty interesting to say the least and I found myself not really being loving at the time. I started to create this whole narrative around a bumper sticker and I started to be a bit judgmental and I was thinking oh I bet this person thinks this way and does these things and I was just creating this completely unnecessary narrative around this person and they get their food their order and they drive off. I pull up to the window and the first thing I hear is the car in front of you paid for your order and it was this slap-in-the-face moment for me because I had been creating this judgmental narrative around someone and the whole time they were being generous. You know I was looking with stingy eyes. I was looking to take to take from this person and the whole time they were looking to give. They were looking to be generous and I wanted to encourage you with that and challenge you with that the same way I was challenged that how am I looking to give when I'm interacting with other people in life in my world am I looking to take take something for myself or am I looking to give to give and be generous and then have healthy eyes and as we read in Scripture as we have healthy eyes our lives will be full of life and light and it's the light of Jesus we get to share that light of Jesus as we look with healthy generous eyes so I want to encourage you with that this morning as you go throughout your day throughout your week think how am I looking to give rather than looking to take it how am I shining and showing that light of Jesus to others
