I was reading this morning in Psalms and in Psalms 3 verse 5 David writes that he lies down to sleep and he wakes up again because the Lord sustains him. And I was thinking about that truth how the Lord sustains us and was thinking about what does it mean to sustain something? Why do we do it? What's the point of sustaining something? And a few examples come to mind. The first one is a garden. I think about the effort that it takes to sustain a garden. You've got to till the soil, make sure the ground is good, plant the seeds, water, make sure it's getting sunlight. And why do you do that? Why do you sustain it? And one reason is because there's value and purpose in a garden, right? It's providing provision. It's giving food. You sustain it because there's purpose. Another example I think of and you might relate if you're someone that's in a musical background is a sustained note. And the purpose of having a sustained note, it's a note in a song that's held out for an extended period of time because it creates suspense and anticipation to the listener. Like, oh what's coming next? What's on the other side of this note? There's purpose in it being sustained. And another example is this bookshelf. My wife's bookshelf behind me. You can see it's organized by color and by pattern. And I was thinking, you know, if I move a book, if my son moves a book, you better believe my wife is gonna sustain this organization, right? There's value in it. There's purpose in it. And when David writes this psalm, what is crazy to me is that he's actually writing it in a moment where he's fleeing death. He's got a son that has turned rebellious and conspired against him and is trying to kill David. So he's on the run, literally running from death. Yet he's finding comfort knowing that he wakes up every day because the Lord is sustaining him. Why? Because there's value and purpose in David's life. And I want to encourage you with that today regardless of what you're facing. Maybe it was tougher for you to wake up today. I want to encourage you to know that if there is breath in your lungs, if you're listening to this right now, it's because the Lord is sustaining you. Why? Because there is value in your life. He created you for a purpose and he is sustaining you for that purpose. And I want to encourage you with that today to not lose hope and to really be anchored in the truth that the Lord is sustaining you for a purpose.
