The third commandment warns against misusing God's name, which includes using it carelessly or falsely swearing by it. Let's maintain proper respect for God's name in our conversations.

Back again thinking about the Bible and thinking about God's law. The next command, you shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain for he will not leave him guiltless who takes his name in vain. And we often think that that's misusing God's name as a curse word and that certainly would be part of it, that is misusing his name. But in the culture that this was presented originally it would have been more along the lines of someone who used the name of God to swear and say by Yahweh I swear such-and-such to be true and they're misusing that because they do that in order to deceive and that would be the case where you're misusing the name and God will not hold them guiltless. Another thing that that might be the case where if it were used in the court or in the gate, the city gate where the court would be held, and someone was making a claim and claiming that God's, you know, by God I say this is true by Yahweh's name. And again not holding them guiltless would have to do with the fact that the law says in the case law that anyone who brings false testimony, whatever they were testifying concerning to say it was a murder or a theft or whatever, that whatever it was that would have happened to the other person if they had been found guilty, then that would happen to them. So if you were falsely testifying about someone who was not guilty of murder but you said they were and it was later found out that you were giving false testimony that you were losing God's name in vain, you were making the claim, excuse me, that by Yahweh this is true, then that same punishment would be visited upon you. So misuse of God's name. And I think the principle in today's world for us is pretty simple. We don't, we should never use God's name as a curse word or as a exclamation or whatever. We should also not use God's name as some people say well I swear, you know, to the Lord God or whatever they might say as a means of trying to emphasize their truthfulness or emphasize their statement and whether they're speaking the truth or not, just to use that in casual conversation I believe personally would be a misuse of the name of God and something that we shouldn't do. But primarily for us I think it happens on a daily basis. I've met so many people who profess Christ and yet they use God's name in a very casual fashion in conversation to emphasize something or to make a point or whatever and we need to be careful. We need to be very careful that we maintain proper respect for our Lord God and in this case do not use his name in vain. Now I'm gonna try and keep these videos a little bit shorter. They've been, they're supposed to, according to administration, be kept around three minutes and I've been running over that. I don't want to have administration of the website showing up at my door in the middle of night, you know, pounding when they won't do that of course. But I'm gonna try and keep these things a little bit shorter so I'm gonna end with that and God bless you. Think about today, how have you perhaps misused the name of God? Ask him to forgive you and ask him to give you strength to not do that in the future. We'll see you again tomorrow.
