Hello and welcome to this inaugural video in the series Thinking About the Bible. In the first series of teachings we will be thinking about love. And today we're going to read a passage from scripture that you might think has very little, if anything, to do with love. But I want to read to you from Luke chapter 6, verses 46 through 49. I'm reading from the New Living Translation. And this is Jesus, and he says, So Jesus is talking about foundations. He's talking about what we build our life on. And as we're going to see through this series Thinking About Love, what he tells us elsewhere in scripture is that the two foundational teachings that he wants us to build our life on have to do with love. And we're going to see what those are tomorrow as we continue in this series. But today what I want you to do is think about the foundation that you have in your life. Is your foundation what Jesus teaches? I know a lot of Christians over the years I've talked to who have, we've talked about foundations, some of the things that we presuppose as being truth, the absolute truth that we build our life upon. And time and time again I've run across folks who love the Lord Jesus Christ. They have made a confession of faith. They are doing their best to live in Christ-likeness. And yet there's these things that have crept into their life that have become foundational beliefs that actually are not scriptural. And so what I want you to do today is to think about the Bible in the sense that you're thinking about the teaching of Jesus Christ. And think about your foundation. What are the things that you have placed at the absolute center of your life? What are the things that you build your life upon? What are the things that you consider absolutes? Jesus says that if you don't build your life on his teaching, you don't really have a foundation. Now he doesn't say that building your life on his foundation, his teaching, that that somehow keeps you from experiencing trouble in life. That doesn't happen. But what he does say is that if you have built your life upon his teaching, when the hard times come, when the storms come, when the floodwaters rise and break against your life, then you can withstand that because you've built your life on that solid foundation of the teaching of Jesus Christ. And that's what the house is, of course, our life. Our life must be built upon what Jesus teaches. And then we can make it through those tough times, relationship issues, financial problems, health issues, all the things that we experience in life. We know if we have Jesus Christ at the center of our life and his teaching as our foundation, we know that we can make it through those tough times. Well, I look forward to thinking about love. We're going to start again tomorrow with another step in that direction of understanding what the Bible tells us about love. But today, remember, I want you to think about along with me, I'll be thinking about the same things throughout this day. What is it that I've built my life upon? Am I building my life upon the teaching of Jesus Christ, or am I building my life upon something else? I want to have the solidity of a life built upon what Jesus teaches.
