Finding joy, day six, the beans, or the background. We're back with Paul's letter to the Roman believers. In today's verses, Paul is explaining how it is we're called to do different jobs and why. The verse, Romans chapter 12, verses 6 through 8. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith. If it is serving, then serve. If it is teaching, then teach. If it is to encourage, then give encouragement. If it is giving, then give generously. If it is to lead, do it diligently. If it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. Esteem, what does this mean to me and how can I apply it to my life today? So often, we define ourselves by our work. If we feel accomplished in the office that day, we feel accomplished in life. Our work at home is the same way. On the days when we get the laundry put away, the house is clean, and the kids are well behaved, we consider ourselves good and worthy. On the flip side, when things aren't perfect at home or at the office, we beat ourselves up and these negative thoughts spill over into the rest of our lives. What you accomplish or don't on your to-do list each day does not define you. God equipped you with special gifts. Gifts that allow you to parent, to work, to be a friend, sibling, child, spouse, all of the things that you were created to be. However, remember a vitally important truth. Those gifts are powered by the Holy Spirit, not you. That means the weight we place on ourselves to be perfect is not necessary. It is not what Jesus wants for you. What Jesus wants for you is to identify your gifts and use them to the best of your ability. He wants you to find joy as you work because you're using the natural gifts He's blessed you with. It feels right, so why stress? Take some time today to really reflect on your talents. What gifts has God blessed you with? How are you finding joy in life by using those gifts?
